ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems

ISO Standards are created and recognized by the International Organization for Standardization, designed to set a baseline level of quality for businesses providing manufacturing and technological products and services.  With over 160 participant countries having developed over 23,300 separate standards, these standards are globally recognized and respected. ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Framework outlines the management of activities and functions of an organization to maintain a commitment to quality, leading to excellence in products or services.

ISO 9001:2015 provides the baseline requirements for planning, establishing, operating, monitoring and improving Quality Management Systems (QMS). Policies should be specific to the industry and company, with an emphasis on risk management and performance monitoring. This means that in addition to conforming with the company’s own quality regime, policies must be crafted in accordance with specific industry standards. It is advised that companies seek certification of its quality management system by an accredited agency.

In crafting QMS policies, policymakers and management should consider its technological environment and obligations under ISO 27001:2022, the general market standards of its requisite industry, the company’s culture of technical knowledge and performance capabilities, the expectations of its customers and vendors, and the legal and regulatory requirements of its operating environment and jurisdiction.

Leadership—whether management, senior executives, advisory boards or others—share several aspects of the ISO 9001:2015 framework. These include accountability for the QMS’ success, coordinating policy with the company’s strategic objectives, communicating, promoting and enforcing company compliance, establishing and maintaining resources for implementation and operation, and evaluating risks and benefits within the QMS framework.
